Manfred Mueller worked as a pilot for Lufthansa German Airlines for more than 41 years. He received an accident investigator training at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles in addition to his pilot training in Bremen and Phoenix, Az. In the year 2002 he was appointed Head of Flight Safety. Since 2010 until his retirement in 2020 he was General Manager Flight Safety Research for the Lufthansa Group.
An important focus of his research work was a quantitative determination and evaluation of flight safety risks. This interdisciplinary research project was financed by the German Federal Ministry for Economics and Technology.
Since 1995 Manfred Mueller expanded his risk management work to additional topics. As a few examples: The medical field, mechanical engineering, chemical industry, automotive engineering and mining. He conducts seminars and workshops to transfer aviation safety concepts to other industries.
Since more than two decades Manfred Mueller teaches at the University of Bremen and the Technical University of Munich. From 2014 on he supported the European Commission in organizing projects to improve flight safety within the EU. In 2019 Manfred Mueller was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit for his commitments in the field of risk management.
